The Escape of Marvin the Ape

by Caralyn and Mark Buehner

The Escape of Marvin the Ape

Delight children by reading The Escape of Marvin the Ape aloud.  Children will want to hold this book and look over all the pictures to see how Marvin is hiding in plain sight all over town.  No one seems to pay any attention to the fact he is a Gorilla, and in every picture the police are not looking in the correct place to see Marvin.  The children know where he is, and this is hilarious to them.

My PDF has the following things:

  1. a sequencing work page for the story,
  2. and answer key,
  3. a writing workshop writing frame, and
  4. three different gorilla coloring and writing pages.

For differentiation, the gorilla pages could be inserts or a shorter writing frame, omitting the open-ended writing pages.   The Escape of Marvin the Ape work pages PDF (8 pages, see photo of one of the pages, below)

The Escape of Marvin the Ape

This book delights children who can absolutely see the gorilla hiding in plain site while the grown-ups cannot see him. They will excitedly tell you exactly where he is, laughing at the “disguises” Marvin uses. This is a reread and a good book for children to read to adults as they will be able to retell it well. Retelling is very important for it is a skill checked by teachers in reading conferences at school in primary grades.

The children’s written stories do not have to be about gorillas, as the writing frame is open-ended.  Looking through zoo and animal books may help pre-writing brainstorming, and help prompt animal selection for writers. Are they able to think of how a giraffe might escape detection? A monkey? A hippo? They are sure to have some excellent ideas.
