This chapter book is a dog lover’s story, with a sad ending. Riley, the dog, never learns to behave and can’t live with William longer than the summer. Mom lets William get a dog from the pound two months after his Grandpa died, and from the beginning, the behavior issues are a problem. The story is exciting, however, and is appropriate for children in grades 4-6. There is a reporter in the story, for instance. Very sensitive children should be told the ending and be able to decide for themselves if it is a book they would like to read or not. Eve Bunting is a wonderful author and has written many other books for children.
