Backyard Books:  Are You a Grasshopper?

by Judy Allen and Tudor Humphries

Student work page and PDF:  Are You a Grasshopper work page and answer key

This book answers many questions children may have about grasshoppers they may see or catch.  Grasshoppers are actually very interesting.  This book describes but does not name incomplete metamorphosis, so the difference between complete and incomplete metamorphosis could be pointed out to the children.  Complete metamorphosis is usually known by children who have observed caterpillars and butterflies.  The book does a wonderful job of describing life from the viewpoint of the grasshopper in statements such as, “Now you have small, stubby wings.”  A comparison is made between the abilities of grasshoppers and children near the end of the book.  Locusts are described at the very end of the book, as locusts can fly and most kinds of grasshoppers actually cannot fly.  There are 7000 different kinds of grasshoppers!  Child can amaze adults by sharing facts from this level K book. Are You a Grasshopper?
