Free Roll a Snowman Printable Activity

This post has a free roll a Snowman printable activity and a book review. The lovely book When Winter Comes by Nancy Van Laan and illustrated by Susan Gaber could be shared with the children.

This beautiful lullaby picture book is by Nancy Van Laan, author of many children’s books including Rainbow Crow. The illustrations by Susan Gaber will engage the children as they explore thinking about where leaves, animals, and fish “go” during the winter.

Although we had snow in Minnesota this fall, none of of it stayed . . . until now! We were just treated to several days of such nice weather jackets were almost unnecessary.  Of course, we knew it wouldn’t last, and it didn’t.  Children wonder what happens to caterpillars, flowers, and songbirds during the winter.  In this story, a child and his parents walk through a snowfall as he asks such questions.  Where does that little one go by the end of the story?  To sleep!  This is a perfect bedtime story for winter nights.

The two-page spread illustrations so nicely capture a soft snowfall so that your children or students may wish to apprentice themselves to the art and try making a snowy picture.  There are different perspectives such as close up, looking up at the family from the bottom of a lake near fish, and even far away.  The illustrations may inspire the children to try drawing from a different viewpoint themselves.

My freebie today has differentiation for different versions of the activity to make snow people.  Select the directions pages that fit your children or students.

  1. You have such great taste in books. This looks great. You are right, kids really do wonder about those things… my 4 year old is constantly asking questions about all of it (and more!) Thanks for the awesome freebie too. We are putting this on our list.

Dear Book Blog Momma: Thank you so much for your kind comments. My daughter-in-law art teacher used one of the two page spreads to teach foreground, middle ground, and background to her art classes. She tipped me off about this nice book. I have read others by this prolific author and she really understands children. Thanks! You also have great taste in books. Carolyn
